Oh, and reverb, I use plate reverb too to kind of enhance some of that vibrance and sparkle in the top end, but at the same time softening it out a bit, as well as adding a bit more sense of space and richness to my tone, not really prominent, but definitely clearly noticeable, and set with a 10ms pre delay for it not to blur out my attacks too much. They are definitely comparable to Fender. ERIC JOHNSON Click here to watch this Rig Rundown.

Then the volume and tone controls on my guitar take care of the rest. Bottom: The other axe Johnson relies on heavily is a 1954 Fender Stratocaster. And for complete custom control and a new level of realism, GUITAR RIG 5 PRO gives you the all-new Control Room Pro. I also fell like the neck and bridge humbuckers of my SG combined, with the neck pickup adjusted down fairly low, possibly is the perfect pickup configuration for achieving this kind of tonal ideal, though likely a pair of quality Alnico II humbuckers would have been even more ideal than the cheap ceramic ones I have installed currently, but with some thorough pickup adjustments, including the individual adjustable pole pieces, and EQ'ing, beside my amp's EQ using an 8 band graphic equalizer pedal, it is still very doable for me to get at least close enough. It starts breaking up nicely really early (as soon as the volume is turned past 1.5), so getting enough juice is not a problem even at relatives conservative volumes, especially with humbuckers. Ironically, the tune he is a lot of acclaimed for 'Cliffs of Dover' was tracked on a Gibson ES-335.

That's what I am aiming for at least, and I actually think I've managed to nail it down pretty good. In contempo years he has aswell added his Fender signature archetypal guitar to the mix, which, IMHO, is easily down the best off the shelf Fender Strat you can buy today.

Punchy, but in no way boomy or muddy, low end, quite pronounced, articulated and well defined, mids, though never to the point where they become nasal or harsh sounding, a vibrant sparkling high end, neither too biting or ever making the tone too thin or weak sounding in any way.Īll in all a more loose and open sounding than firm and compact tone, I suppose somewhat to the softer side, though not at the expense of focus and articulation, I guess by having well defined but well rounded edges.
